We’ll let you fill in the blank. So, what are we referring to? Well, it seems that the Metropolitan Planning Committee (a national organization that doesn’t seem to have a website) has named Bull Street one of the 10 great streets in the nation due to its good working and living environment, architectural features, accessibility, functionality and community involvement. The elements the association found most distinctive about the street are its five squares, the way they connect with streets and neighborhoods, and the various architectural styles that give the feeling that the street has evolved over time. The association also cited the mixed-use character of the street, where churches, government buildings, homes, offices, shops and cafes all co-exist, and granite curbs, brick sidewalks, benches and mature trees “make it one of the best walking streets in town. You can read what SavannahNOW had to say HERE.

Oh, did I mention they were referring only the part of Bull Street that stretches from city hall to Forsyth Park. How convenient, huh? And here I thought they were talking about the more affluent part of Bull Street where David’s Supermarket meets Starland meets Church’s Fried Chicken.

Let’s not forget the ritzy stretch around Ardsley Park Cleaners!

It’s a Popeye’s Chicken on Bull St. The Church’s Fried Chickens are on Montgomery.

And now I want some Church’s chicken strips and biscuits. I don’t mind driving to that side of town to get some of those biscuits.

It’s called the American Planning Association–not the Metropolitan Planning Committee. Maybe you got it mixed up with the Metroplitan Planning Commission. And, yes, it does have a website: www.planning.org.

The segment was chosen because the were numerous examples of good planning elements. This street has existed for five centuries and has transitioned remarkably well over this span.

South of Forsyth, there has been a loss of cohesion and buildings, there are no squares, parking lots begin to appear, it lacks the vitality the street has farther north…so that’s why that portion wasn’t included. Convenient, huh?
