Thai on the feedbag
Published Date: August 30th, 2007
As of October 28 Ruan Thai is now open at 17 West Broughton Street. Occupying the former Poppy’s (né Coop’s) this Thai restaurant is not a bad offering for the downtown pallet. Their tag line, “Tradition with a tasteful touch” is an accurate one as the place was a bit classy for its space. From the moment I walked in I was attended to by no less than three waitresses (which could have had something to do with the lack of diners) offering me a bevy of drinks (well, at least water) and an appetizer. Not yet serving beer or any alcohol I opted for a large water as I dined for about a half hour on the Appetizer Sampler ($10.95) and some friend rice. The fried rice at Ruan is probably the best I have ever had. It had fresh tomato in it and some lovely samplings of onions. My date chose the Yellow Curry with Chicken and not only was it delicious, she says, but came in artful form with an edible flower and a butterfly cut out of a carrot. The prices are a bit higher than other asian restaurants in the area with a spring roll starting at $4.95 and prices running the gamut up to a $24.95 rack of lamb. One of the most impressive parts of the night though was the privacy we felt while dining and the freshness of the air. I hate when restaurants smell like dirty griddle cakes and leftover cooking grease. With our bill for two hitting right at $30 it was a nice night out and one I look forward to again.
NOTE: There is a children’s menu offering corn dogs to mini portions of fried rice.

Yummy in my tummy!
Thanks for the tip.
