Growing Hope Gallery Expo Saturday 9/8 - 9am to 3pm
Published Date: August 21st, 2007Growing Hope Gallery Expo Saturday 9/8 from 9am to 3pm
Union Mission’s Growing Hope Artisans Cooperative is hosting the 2nd Annual Growing Hope Gallery Expo on September 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. next to the Starfish Café at the corner of East Broad and Gwinnett Streets.
The Growing Hope Gallery Expo is a free, public event featuring 24 local and regional artists demonstrating their work as well as offering hands-on arts and craft activities for all ages.
These artists will also showcase and sell original art in this indoor/outdoor event. Performances featuring artists in music, dance and spoken word are part of this day of creativity and fun.
An exciting addition to this years’ event will be the Generations of Change/My Savannah archive booth.
Community members are encouraged to draw, write or speak (and be recorded) about their experiences and the changes they’ve seen in Savannah – especially in the areas of East Broad and Gwinnett Streets. This ongoing project will be included in a larger archive to be housed at the future Growing Hope Gallery & Studio on East Gwinnett Street.
Other activities for the day are:
free snacks provided by The New South Café and Starfish Café; musical & spoken word performances by AWOL and L.A.; dance performances by Abeni Cultural Arts and Ayoluwa African Dance Theatre; living history by the African Spirit; an open mic session at 2pm; recycling education by Green Lifespace; and a photography exhibit featuring work by juvenile offenders from the Savannah Impact Program’s Summer Project.
In addition to local and regional artists, Growing Hope Artisan Cooperative members (artists impacted by homelessness) will participate. Union Mission wants to bring creative arts to its clients as well as anyone underserved by arts access in our community. We also want to use this opportunity to dispel stereotypes about homelessness within the larger community.
