I get around

Published Date: August 15th, 2007

VespaHas anyone else noticed the growing number of scooters in the downtown area? This morning we were meeting at Starbucks when we noticed five scooters parked outside. We know one belongs to one of the managers there and one belongs to the general manager of a popular, local bar. The other three were of different makes and didn’t see to have an owner in sight. I think it’s great that this is happening. Sure, the scooter uses gas. Most of them get exceptional gas mileage though and there are even some electric scooters being developed and marketed. I also like the idea that parking is limitless right now. Just pick a curb or a sidewalk or something similar and throw it up on the kickstand. I am afraid that once the city officials see this rampant new wave of transportation they will come up with some decal or pass that allows parking only for those that pay. Until then though, what a way to get around!

I would LOVE to get a scooter, especially for when we want to go downtown on these hot days but really don’t feel like walking.

I noticed your blogorlando button - it’d be fun to get a group of Savannah bloggers to all meet up down there!

I’m at City Hall right now and I asked Assistant to the City Manager Sean Brandon about the scooter parking.

“We generally discourage parking on the sidewalks, but I don’t think there is anything on the books prohibiting it.”

But I doubt scooter parking is high on the council’s agenda right now. Besides, I heard Van Johnson and the mayor hang out at that scooter shop on Broughton.

My husband and I are dyin to get a scooter, but until we save up enough $ for one…we’re all about biking Savannah. We probably drive somewhere about once a week.

Wait, wait.

Sean, being a researching guru, looked it up.

He said that there is a provision in the law that says nothing motorized can be parked in a public right of way.

But what about parking on the street? That’s where it’s unclear, he said.

But again, no one is going to be enforcing this stuff - I think.

Well, next time I see my friend Van park his in front of Starbucks I will ask him about the ruling. :)
