And the award goes to….ME

Published Date: May 23rd, 2007

I write this entry at the risk of sounding self-righteous and self-serving. However, I do represent a much larger team of bloggers and am convicted to write this on behalf of bloggers through the creative coast. I think by now we are all aware of the “Best Of” awards offered by Connect Savannah. They are those annual awards voted on by the people (or at least the people that take the time to fill out the painfully long survey) for the best of everything in Savannah. Anyway. I have to admit that I was hoping blogsavannah would perhaps take “Best Blog” this year in part for its design, in part for its consistent writing, in part because of its content, and in part because it put together the first ever blog Un-Con in Savannah. You can imagine the dissapointment felt though when these words were read this afternoon:

Best Local Blogger
Jim Morekis
Savannah “Blogfather” and Connect Savannah editor blogs at connectsavannah.com/index.php/blogs/jimmorekis/ with a focus on politics and local weirdness.

Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me for the second year in a row? How can the best blog in Savannah possibly go to a blog that has NO RSS feed, has no distinct URL, has the most boring design out there, and boasts no visual anything. How do you even award yourself an award? Do you act surprised? You counted the votes to begin with, I would think. WOW! Just to show I am not high on my own horse I point you to some other worthy Savannah blogs:

Coastal MINIS
Confessions of a Cartogropher
the Dizzy Girl
iTour Savannah
Super Velma
South of the Gnat Line

I guess I should just remember that everyone has to have a reason to pat themselves on the back and if I were in a Donald Trump position I would probably name myself Ms. America too!

So, in closing (before I sound too overly negative and rude) I applaud all the bloggers out there that are speaking up whenever and however without due respect. It is you that are the best! Keep on speaking. blogsavannah is listening…..especially when you have an RSS feed.

Word up, brother.

He even used his self-applied and self-righteous moniker The Blogfather.

At first, I took issue with that moniker. After much thought though, I am going to let him use it. One, it sounds ridiculous. Two, if he really meant it he would design a topbar (masthead for you designers out there) incorporating that tag. Three, in reference to the Godfather movies, the name would indicate that although he may have been the first on the scene, he WILL NOT be the last man standing. In fact, he will become bloated, hard to understand, self-absorbed, and dead (figuratively, of course). So, I do hope he enjoyes his 15 Mb of fame now because when the smoke clears, no one will remember the awards and they’ll be registering for blogsavannah ‘08.

I figured blogsavannah was a shoo-in too. Perhaps taking almost the entire month of May off didn’t help, eh? Larson slowed down there for awhile, too, for that matter.

This poll is like the Oscars in that the freshest thing in people’s minds tends to win (I think we all can agree that’s the only way it’s like the Oscars).

In any case there’s an obvious self-selection bias, i.e, being a Connect readers’ poll it’s by definition more likely to reflect well on our content.

Kudos to you for commenting Jim. Yeah, I will admit, blogging as of late has seemed almost forced for us around here so we have, in fact, taken some time off. There has been plenty to write about. Little motivation to do so though. I don’t fault you (unless you fixed the voting…hahahahaha). I just have to keep things stirred. The important thing is that Savannah has a real blog and new media presence and that is the real winner, methinks.

No question, this seems a little suspect (kinda like when you run for president, loose the popular vote, and then get elected anyway). On the other hand, with the Connect staff realizing their editor won the popular vote, it seems like they would have withdrawn the nomination. I could be wrong, just thought that was the rule of thumb (or common courtesy, if you will) in a sitch like this.

Besides Drew… This is all your fault for not inviting the city’s blog forefathers to come and play in the Un-Con sandbox. :)

Actually Jim did lead a session at the Un-Con. However, you are right, I did not ask for his blessing ahead of time. I should have watched the movie closer to get my cue. hahahahaha.

Ooo….drama! Maybe if Savannah bloggers actually posted daily, hourly (as in the city blogs DCist, Gothamist, etc) we’d have some actual competition! When I return from Labor Day, GAME ON!

Oh, and I can never comment on the Connect’s blog, I read it every time it’s updated (it’s on my Bloglines.com), I think my computer can’t figure it out. It hasn’t worked for me the few times I’ve tried…

You’re so cute MappyB. You reference two blogs from two very large metropolitan areas. Nothing happens here in Savannah at the pace it does in Gotham City. hahahahaha. I could try though. In fact, I will challenge myself to post every hour tomorrow to see what happens. hahahahaha. GAME ON, indeed!

Yeah, I slowed down for a while. It’s hard to find good blog posts when daily work gets busy.

And I’m glad Morekis posted. He does have a point, although I’m not sure the poll would automatically reflect well on Connect’s content. I think it’s what they know so they voted for it.

The rest of us Savannah bloggers should take it as a lesson that maybe not as many people are reading us as we like to think.

We should beef up our self-marketing.

CONTEST! Drew, let’s start a contest Tuesday to see how often we can all post with something worthwhile.

Who is game?

Angel says: “On the other hand, with the Connect staff realizing their editor won the popular vote, it seems like they would have withdrawn the nomination.”

So which is it? Did we falsify the voting so that I would win, or should we falsify the voting so that I won’t win?

(And you’re involving Creative Coast in this why??)

I don’t know how to put it any more simply:
The. One. That. Gets. The. Most. Votes. Wins.

That’s the only rule. Notice there’s no rule about everybody having to like the results. Believe me, I don’t like the fact that our competition at savannahnow.com has racked up Best Website every single year the category has existed. But apparently a lot of our readers think they’re the best and vote for them. Therefore, they win.

Ooooohhhh, now we are on a new topic. Corporate blogging. I will forget about The.One. and instead focus on the fine line that separates Angel from responding as an individual or Angel responding as an employee of TCCi. I think that while she did write her comment during office hours (most likely on TCCi equipment) she still responded as an individual and not a sanctioned voice of TCCi. Any thoughts on this?

OK. Contest. Sounds awesome. What day and for how many hours? I am into it now. Do we get extra “points” for image inclusion?

Awesome idea, points for images, audio and video. More points for self-made audio and video.

What about Wednesday? I might be off Tuesday.

So something good came of all this after all. My work is done here.

It ain’t done, Blogfather. You are in the contest.

Well played, all. What is this contest to be called? “Blog my dust?” Who’s going to print up the T-shirts and lanyards? Drew? Just kidding, Man, you’ve done more than your share. I like the envious (sometimes puzzled) looks I get when I wear my BlogSavannah T-shirt to the gym.

Hi, it’s the Best of vote counter here.
Plain and simple, Jim got the most votes by far. I was surprised also, because there seemed to be lot more blogs in Savannah now. If anything it probably has to do with it being a Connect Savannah poll, so most of the voters knew Jim’s blog. An believe me, if we were fiddling with the votes, there’s no way that savannahnow.com would have won for the past 5 years.

As to this comment:
“How can the best blog in Savannah possibly go to a blog that has NO RSS feed, has no distinct URL, has the most boring design out there, and boasts no visual anything”

Jim’s blog has had an RSS feed for a few months now:
http://connectsavannah.com/index.php/blogs/comments/rss-is-up/

As for the rest, none of it matters as long as content is there. In fact, I’d argue that if you’re focusing on just those things, then you’re probably NOT going to have well read blog or even a very good one. Jim’s blog definitely needs some graphic attention (which’ll happen at some point this summer), but what matters in the end is content.

Also Jim’s blog is directly linked from our homepage. So, everyone who comes to our website can see that Jim has a blog and check it out.

True, I did quote large cities, true true. Plus, those blogs are hosted by people whose job it is to sit there all day and blog, so, I suppose, that wasn’t really far to compare! I’m not sure about my involvement in a contest since I’ll be at work all day, but I’d love to read them all! I’ll post whenever I can. Have a good Memorial Day weekend - we’re off to Virginia!

Count me in. Someone put down guidelines and let’s hop to it. =O)

I’d like to offer “congrats”….but after perusing thru the comments…..who should I “congrat”? hmmmmmmm…..

Nevermind - congratulations, anyhoo…..so there.

And - thank you kindly for the “plug”; I hope I’ll be around for the contest….must hang notes all over the ‘puter screen….

Have a great (long) weekend ~
Y’all behave,
Harriette

wow, looks like i’ve missed a lot today…

Jim says: “So which is it? Did we falsify the voting so that I would win, or should we falsify the voting so that I won’t win?”

that’s exactly it. i was throwing two theories out there. one more conspirative than the other, but a theory none the less. i took symbolic logic in college as well and got a “D” (it was still money well spent), but i think i can figure out that The.One.That.Gets.The.Most.Votes.Wins. i grasp that.

i would have withdrawn my nomination just off of GP (”its the principalities, smokie”). i would have felt guilty about winning. did i also mention i was catholic?

oh, and forgot to touch on the corp blogging issue… the line that separates my responses from “TCCi employee” or “individual” ones all depends on whether my boss hates ‘em or loves ‘em. ;)

Well shit. There goes yet another blogger award that I didn’t win. Oh whatever will I do. LOL. Next year I’ll have to blackmail more people into putting my blog on the damn survey.

Thanks for the mention and link as another worthy Savannah blog. I’ve been a very bad blogSavannah blogger lately. I’ll work on that. :)

And congrats, Jim. You bastid.
