Savannah is full of the ‘creative class’

Richard Florida
The Lucas Theatre played host last night to Richard Florida, one of the world’s leading social theorists and public intellectuals. He spoke on a narrow spectrum of topics which all centered around the idea that we are all creative and that Savannah has the potential to harness that creativity and disperse it throughout. There were a couple interesting questions following his lecture that revolved around social media as a roadblock to true artistic collaboration, how African-Americans and our largely minority population figured into this creative class equation, and how could Savannah foster the “garage band” mentality of creative types when the cost of living and real estate is so astronomical? I met Richard afterwards and invited him to blogsavannah - the UnCon. Did anyone else go? Thoughts?

Oh, I nearly forgot. The mayor was present and aside from presenting RF with a “digital key” to the city he also announced a new campaign of sorts that will surely come up in the future. Remember these words:

Talent. Tolerance. Technology.
