“The Nutcracker”: A New Holiday Tradition
Published Date: December 11th, 2006
I attended my very first showing of “The Nutcracker” on Saturday night. I’ve been trying to get my husband to take me for years, but he’s a big “man’s man”, so he’s not into ballet. Our young son went with his class last year, so he moaned and groaned when I threw out the idea of taking him with me. And so, I took myself on Saturday night, as a late birthday gift. I was also there for PIXels, taking pictures of people in attendance and of the show and such.
And what a show it was. I guess the kid in me came out once the lights went down and that familiar music began to play. “The Nutcracker” is a story that every child knows and loves, but it was nice to see the Savannah Danse Theatre add a little Savannah flare to it. The story was set at the Gingerbread House, complete with Savannah River Rats, Waltzing Azaleas, Dixie Crystals, and the Lady of Six Thousand Songs. At the risk of sounding extremely corny, it truly was a magical experience.
I spoke to a lot of people who said “The Nutcracker” has become something of a holiday tradition for them. It was a pleasure to see the smiles on the children and it really brought back a lot of memories of being that young during the holidays.
I look forward to attending next year’s performance and making “The Nutcracker” a new holiday tradition.
