I want a big, honkin’ burger…

Big Burger

Where do I get it? For those who are visiting the Savannah area or who live here and just aren’t “in the know”…where are some of the top burger places? If we had to assign the “Top 5 burgers” in Savannah…what and where? Let’s hear it!

I love getting a good burger at McDonoughs.

They have them made perfectly until around 9-10pm each night.

that’s my favorite.

Well, so far I have heard that McDonoughs has a great burger…at night. I have heard that Krystal sucks unless you are a bit ‘under the influence’…of something. I have also heard that New South Cafe has a good burger. Interesting. I have never even heard of New South. Any others?

So now we are hearing about a pretty decent crab burger from Angus Burger over on Skidaway. Interesting….a crab burger???

I’ve lived here a long long time and I love a good burger. There have been some really great burger joints over the years.

My current favoite is at the SunnyUp Restaurant at 800 Derenne Avenue in the Kensington Shopping Center. The burger is flavorful and hand formed, at least a half pounder — meaty not greasy — and cooked to perfection. Get what you want on it. I prefer onions, lettuce, mayo only. Buns are always fresh and hold up well to the last bite. I’ll put this lip-smackin’ burger right up there with any in Savannah. Coming up a close second is the Joe Burger at Zunzi’s on York Street. Any of Johnny DeBeer’s food is worth a second trip.

I’ve heard good things about the Dawg House on Skidaway Road, but have not tried one yet.

I would say that the beef burger at Sweatleaf was hard to beat don’t you know - what, what… its…so…. beefy old chap!

My two best ideas have been named:
Sweet Leaf on Abercorn and New South Cafe on Skidaway.
Anything they do is brilliant. Standards and/or 21st century variations on standards. Everything is good and the pri$e is right, true for both places.

How about a dog? The New Tanners on Broughton serves up a great dog AND presents it with flair. The staff will brag to one another “hey, look at this one, it’s beautiful, see how I put the pickle at an angle, and tried this new layering”. Wonderful to hear the grill cook fall in love with your lunch while they’re fixing it.

The one and only place to get a fresh, in house ground, and made daily burger (1/2 Lb) is at The Crystal Beer Parlor, corner of Jones and Jefferson streets in the historic district. Winner of The Silver spoon -Best all around eatery -in Georgia two years running. Opened in 1933 as a speakeasy and still going strong.
This burger can not be beat!! And it as live New Orleans Jazz every Friday night.
