SCAD Bees

Now I know that SCAD is a fantastic Art and Design school and has won numerous awards in the past few years for its successes. I also know that the cost of secondary education per year is twice as high as the average yearly wage in 38% of America. However, I am keenly aware of SCADs knack for purchasing seemingly unneccessary things including buildings (I call it the Mercer syndrome), lavish gifts for “distinguished” guests of the institution, and furnishings in the building. So, I guess it should come as no shock to see the advances being made on York Hall. Scheduled to open in winter 2007, this Mediterranean-style building will house many of the college’s administrative departments. I also got a chance to talk with one of the workers (not that this is the most reliable source of information, mind you) while in line at Wendy’s. The interior he was describing was incredible and the cost seems to be NO problem for the school. Call me crazy but I think the spending is getting excessive now. Perhaps Savannah should be renamed Wallace, Georgia?

And in other SCAD news, Savannah College of Art and Design President Paula S. Wallace will host her quarterly chat day Nov. 10, 12:30-3 p.m. at Lai Wa Hall, 622 Drayton St. in Savannah. Appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis. And to flex their tech muscle, an online chat for all students will be held Nov. 10, 4-5:30 p.m.

So crime DOES pay !

Interesting sentiment Mr. Ogelthorpe. I assume you are referring to the academic capitalism that seems to be taking place on college campuses throughout our country as well as SCAD specifically. If so, you share a feeling that many do. I have firsthand experience with cost -vs- quality (of teachers, facilities, opportunities, etc) at SCAD and have often felt a bit cheated. However, I know colleagues who feel the same way relative to their school. Crime does seem to pay though. Only in America, my friend; land of the FREE!
