Another of Savannah’s secrets

Derby Devils

This Saturday at 5:30pm you can bring the family out to Lake Mayer skating rink to meet and skate with one of the low countries coolest, kept secrets; the Savannah Derby Devils.

The first all girl flat track Savannah roller derby league was conceived in the summer of 2005. There was talk of a roller derby revival. Thus the Derby Devils were born, creating another athletic outlet for the unconventional women of Savannah. Now, for the uneducated in all things roller, the derby is a unique sport that encourages women of all body types - small, large and in between - to share in a game where each plays an equally important role. In its basic form, Roller Derby is a high speed race between a “jammer” from each team. The jammers must break through a pack of skaters or “blockers.” The jammers then race the track and break through the blockers a second time to earn points. The opposing team’s blockers attempt to keep the jammer from earning points, at times necessitating the use of force. Each race or “bout” has ten quad-skate-clad girls, five per team, competing on a flat track.

Seriously though. When the choices are nothing more exciting than a film festival, outdoor Shakespeare festival, folk music festival, three art openings, and a seafood festival, why not head out to meet some serious chicks on skates?
