This is too cool…

WWII Bombers

Ok, I know we are not breaking journalistic ground with this report but it is so cool I think WE should be the ones talking about it. Now, put aside the new Clint Eastwood movie and your “Band of Brothers” DVD. I even recommend setting aside personal political agendas and other such thoughts. And I beg of you to feast your eyes and minds on the coming of the restored WWII bombers that is going to be taking place all next week in Savannah. Rare aircraft will be available for public tours and guest flights next week. How cool is that?

Unfortunately, only one of nine working B-17 Flying Fortresses and the only fully restored B-24 Liberator in the world will land in Savannah next week for a rare public tour and guest flights. However, for a small fee you can walk through them and gain a sense of perhaps nostalgia and fondness for the sheer mechanization and beauty of these warbirds. And for those of you with a bit more funding, you can fly in the bomber for 30 minutes for just over $400!

I have flown in Collings’s B-17 ‘Nine-O-Nine” from Savannah to Mid-Florida one cold February morning some years ago and I must say it was the most exhilirating ride I have ever had. 2 P-51 escorted us out of Savannah and we flew in formation down the Savannh river with his B-24 “All American”, then some nice low-level runs along the coastal islands. Bob Collings has a marvelous collection of aeroplanes including a 1909 Bleriot and a 1917 Fokker Triplane. Oh… and he also collects cars from the early 1900 on as well as some classic sports and historic Indy 500 racers… he also owns Al Capon’e 1940 somthing Caddy!

How do we get a hold of this gentleman? I would LOVE to interview him and try to take a plane ride (I would pay of course…..maybe! hahaha).

He sometimes travels with the planes but you would be beast of interviewing him over the phone… I will email you his numbers.

I saw both of these beauties fly over our office in Garden City this afternoon ~ 4:30 after taking off from Savannah International. I heard the B-17 from in the office and being a plane lover noted that it was a different sound.

Then it dawned on me what it was and I went charging out of the office to get a glimpse of it with my own eyes. Talk about a treat!

I only made the connection because I’d read your post here. Thanks for the heads up!

WOW! I would have loved to have been you, Chris. If anyone goes to this event and wants a traveling buddy, get in touch with me. I would love to go and take some pics. Or, if you are going with someone else, please take some pics on put them on the Savannah Flickr pool. This is rare treat, methinks.

Oh, And by the way Drew, when I saw the B-17 fly right over head I just stood there with my mouth open even though my camera was about 6 feet away in my car. By the time the Liberator took off I had gathered my composure and had the presence of mind to take a picture.

Unfortunately it cut the corner and didn’t fly as close to me. All I got was a blurry dot off in the distance that I might be able to sell as a UFO pic! (Nothing to see here… Move along.)

Oh, if I only had grabbed the camera for the B-17…
