Washroom, Bathroom, or Restroom?

There seems to be a phenomena sweeping over the chain restaurant business and is quite prevalent here in Savannah. This bit of mystique is the inability of restaurant owners/designers/managers/etc. to simply write Men or Women on the bathroom doors (respectively, of course) or just put the universal, bubbly sort of image for the two sexes. Instead restaurant people use these doors to sharpen their wit, hone their wordplay, or practice their artistry. In Savannah alone I have seen lads and lasses, hombres and mujeres, hot chicks and cool guys, dicks and janes, pinchers and fiddlers (that was a sretch), cocks and chickens, etc. It gets to be a bit much. In fact, I never thought I would wax nostaligic about the old, reliable words Men and Women. Moral of story, I guess….if there is no visible urinal, it is not a men’s restroom!

Personally, I prefer the North Beach Grill (Tybee Island at the Lighthouse) approach: Two restrooms marked, “Restroom”. Very efficient… We’re mostly adults and I think most people respect commode seat courtesy and cleanliness, especially if the restaurant keeps the rooms spotlessly clean.
I do not dine in seafood places that have “Bouys” and “Gulls” on doors. When I see that, I look for another door marked, “Exit.”
