Savannah sets some “lofty” goals
Published Date: October 15th, 2006I am always amazed at the number of lofts that continue to show up on the real estate landscape. It is not just in Savannah either. It is all over. I think the algebraic function behind it is 1X + 1Y = countless numbers. X = person with idea while Y = person with money. You see, I was out the other day and as I got on the I-16 I passed a billboard that read Frogtown Lofts now for sale. “Frogtown”, I asked myself? “What the heck is Frogtown and where is it?”. After further inspection I found out the Frogtown lofts are being renovated/constructed overlooking the I-16 on-ramp. Charming, huh? Turns out Frogtown was consolidated in 1762 under a land grant for the Royal Vale Plantation for the purpose of growing rice. In 1779, the site, along with neighboring Battlefield Park, was witness to one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution. At the end of the battle, over 800 men lay dead. Fast forward 100 years where freed slaves settled in the area forming their own small community. They named it Frogtown due to the large amounts of frogs that would come out of the nearby canal. A fascinating history, I suppose. Hardly the thing real estate dreams are made of though. Anyway. Prices have yet to be set and there is barely more than a building permit on the site. I doubt I will be moving there. Whoever does though. I hope they can rest easy with the sound of motoring vehicles and frogs!
