Awesome Cake

How many of you brave folks attended the Chocoholic Frolic last night? This was my first Frolic and I have to say…my goodness. I had no idea how huge this event was!

The last two Frolics were held at Savannah Station, but because of space, they moved this year’s to the Savannah Civic Center. Tickets were $25-$30 per person and that ticket got you in to an all-you-can-eat-chocolate-extravaganza. What’s even sweeter is that 100% of the proceeds benefiting local breast cancer research. There were 29 vendors for this year’s event and 10,000 ticket holders. Wowza.

I arrived around 5:30PM and spent around five minutes getting some introductions out of the way. When I turned around, I couldn’t believe how many people had come in. It was wall-to-wall bodies, most dressed in some shade of pink. Mad dashes were being made to the Lady and Sons table.

Free chocolate milk was being snatched from the Ben & Jerry barrels at record speeds. It was a scene reminiscent of “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. There was even an Oompa Loompa!

In the two hours I was at the event, one would assume that I consumed large amounts of chocolate goodness. One would, of course, be wrong. The lines were wrapped double around most tables, making it virtually impossible for most to get in and snatch some sweetness.

There were so many people in the Civic Center that I actually stood in one spot for 20 minutes trying to maneuver my way out of the lines. Most people were patient and waited their turn, but there was the rare push and shove. Nothing too bad though and that’s to be expected when you stick that many people in a room with free chocolate.

Even with the long lines, I had a wonderful time. I’m certain that I gained 50 pounds just from breathing the air alone. The vendors and event staff were all courteous and patient. Everyone seemed to be having a jovial time. But then again, how could you have a bad time with a room full of free chocolate?

You will be glad to know that on my way out, I managed to find a stray piece of chocolate on one of the vendor tables and a pink chocolate ribbon.

I walked out of the Civic Center clutching my prizes like Charlie Bucket, only to have them savagely taken from me from my husband and son when I got home.

Tragic indeed.

I was there too and was not all that impressed. Ok, so I was impressed but something about it just didn’t seem right. Maybe it was the gluttony I was surrounded by or the lack of anything spoken in terms of breast cancer research or perhaps even the visual emptiness of the “upper deck” of the civic center. I don’t know. What I do know is that I am glad I didn’t pay $25 to get in. I would rather just donate $25 to an actual cancer research facility and meet some of the patients. It just seemed a bit pompous for me. The chocolate fondue fountain was amazing though. I did appreciate that!

I think they could’ve made use of that huge empty space when you first walk in to the Civic Center. Instead of keeping it empty, they should’ve extended the vendor tables along those walls. I think people would’ve had more walking room and everything would’ve have been so “stuffy”.

I totally agree. How do we get on the planning committee for next years event? Also, there should have been ribbons passed out or lapel pins upon first entering. It would have been nice to have a visual sign of solidarity at the event!

Shame I missed it! It’s fall break for me and I had to rest. Plus, I’m a broke college student, so I couldn’t have afforded it.
