Savannah - land of contradiction, it seems

So, I was trying to find out why the purple ribbons were being tied around the Forsyth Park trees and why the huge canopies were being erected when I stumbled upon two other Savannah events. Both are scheduled for October 12 and both are at the same venue. One is in the morning and one is in the evening.

From 8 to 10:30 AM you can head on down to the Savannah Civic Center for the Savannah Poverty Reuction Initiative Poverty Simulation where groups of 35 to 75 people assume roles in 26 typical families living in poverty. The goal of each family is to survive for one month -or- four 15-minute “weeks.” In this time, participants must maintain secure shelter, utilities, feed their families, make loan payments, meet living expenses, handle unexpected emergencies, access local support services, keep their children in school and more, all while subsisting at or below the poverty level. Not a far fetched reality in the greater Savannah area.

Then from 5:30 PM on, you can go to the same venue and enjoy the 3rd annual Chocoholic Frolic. The Frolic, a dessert and beverage tasting event in which you can taste some of Savannah’s best desserts from 30 regionally well-known restaurants and caterers along with cocktails and drinks. Tickets are $25/person and 100% of sales will benefit breast cancer research.

So, doesn’t it seem odd that in the same place on the same day you can learn what $25 really means?

That is quite a startling differentiation for one building in one day. Interesting choice of the venue coordinators.
