A thought on parallel parking
Published Date: October 11th, 2006We all know that on Broughton Street here in downtown Savannah there are several parallel parking spots that are marked with “2 Hour Parking Limit”. Now, in other cities when I have seen such a rule I also see parking attendants that walk down the road with something that resembles a piece of chalk on a yard stick. They go about marking the tires at a certain time and then returning two hours later to see if there is a car that hasn’t moved (based on the chalk mark). I have seen nothing like that here in Savannah. I was beginning to wonder if they had any system in place for such an event. So, today I tested my luck. I purposely went downtown around 8:45AM to secure my sacred 2 hour spot. I went into Starbucks and had my Grande no-fat Mocha no whip and I waited. 9:45 came and no attendant in sight. 10:45 came and still no attendant. I waited until 11:25 (at this point my anxiety level was getting uncomfortably high) and decided to move. But yet there was no one! No one every checked on my parking status. I parked downtown, for FREE, for 2 hours and 40 minutes without so much as a warning from the city. It was beautiful and petrifying all at once. I realized that the only regulation in those spots is self-regulation. I was so nervous about getting a ticket from some “under cover parking aid” that I moved to avoid any chance of citation. Wow! I think I have issues.
