Lowcountry Down Syndrome Buddy Walk

Published Date: October 8th, 2006

On Saturday, the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society held it’s first annual Buddy Walk at Forsyth Park. Close to a thousand walkers from all around the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry took part in the event, the goal of which was to raise awareness of Down Syndrome and aid those with family members with the genetic disorder.

Booths were set up throughout the park with educational information and representatives to answer questions. Fun activities, such as slides, pumpkin painting, “Princess for a Day” tables, and face-painting kept the kiddies (and some adults!) busy. The Special Olympics Weightlifting Team was on hand to flex some muscle. And the characters from “The Wizard of Oz” even made an appearance.

An official number hasn’t been thrown out yet, but I heard from a few reliable sources who estimate that the amount raised was from somewhere between $30,000-50,000. Way to go!
